Medical Engineering Scholarships
- To be awarded a medical engineering scholarship, a student must fulfill certain eligibility criteria. Often, medical engineering scholarships are available through individual colleges and universities; only students of those colleges are eligible to apply for those awards. Students must be majoring in medical engineering or a related field. Sometimes preference is given to honor students or students who have completed advanced placement courses.
- Medical engineering scholarships vary widely in the amount of financial assistance offered to students, and are typically awarded for a single year of college. Most medical engineering scholarships offer anywhere from $500 to $5,000 for a single scholarship award. For example, the City University of New York offers a biomedical engineering scholarship which awards a student $4,000 in scholarship funding per year, as of 2011.
- Students must apply for medical engineering scholarships through the financial aid office of their institution. Students typically submit an application form, a resume, a school transcript and, in some cases, a personal essay. Some colleges also require an interview with all eligible applicants as part of the screening process for the scholarship. Schools with more developed medical engineering programs may offer a line of medical engineering scholarships for different students. For instance, the University of Utah offers nine different scholarship opportunities for medical engineering students, three each for freshmen, transfer students and continuing education majors.
- Fellowships are similar to scholarships in that they offer financial assistance to students wishing to study medical engineering, but instead of tuition assistance, fellowships offer funding to a graduate student attempting to complete a specific research project. Eligibility requirements typically include completion of a bachelor's degree or master's degree in medical engineering, demonstrated expertise and professional aspirations in medical engineering, and candidates typically also need to present research goals. Fellowship awards can last for one or more academic years and range from about $1,000 to $20,000.
