    • 1). Go to your local carpet store and ask them to give or allow you to buy leftover carpet tubes. The tubes are usually 12 feet long, so decide on the desired height of the column.

    • 2). Measure the column and mark the height you would like it to be. Wrap tape just below that line to use as a guide while you are cutting. Put on safety goggles, then use a coping saw to cut the tube.

    • 3). Cut two pieces of 1 inch thick wood into a circle slightly larger than the base of your column. Put heavy duty adhesive on the base of the cardboard column and around the wood circle. Fill a knee high sock with sand, and tightly tie a knot at the open end. Stuff the sock in the bottom of the cardboard column to give the piece stability. Attach the wooden circle to the cardboard column and allow to dry thoroughly. Once it is dry, use heavy duty adhesive to attach the second circle of wood to the top of the column. Allow to dry thoroughly.

    • 4). Cover the column with chicken wire, and use a staple gun to hold in place. Wrap the column with strips of muslin, dipped in a mixture of one part glue to one part water. Allow to dry. Cover the entire piece in dry wall compound and allow to dry. If needed, add a second coat of dry wall compound. Allow to dry, then paint the desired color.
