Cross the Golden Gate Bridge
Drive across at the very least--or take advantage of good-weather opportunities to walk across one of the world's most famous bridges.
It might be the most spectacular 1.7 mile walk in the world, or at least in the world of bridges. This engineering marvel, completed in 1937, links San Francisco with Marin County. On the San Francisco side, there is a metered parking lot at the Golden Gate National Recreation Area View Area. Some people opt to walk half-way across and then return. If you're up for it, the entire 3.4 round trip will be an unforgettable experience.
The Marin County side has a free parking lot at Vista Point, but you'll pay a one-way $5 toll to drive across to San Francisco.
