How to Make a Murray Lawn Tractor Faster

    • 1). Inspect the muffler mounted on the front of your Murray lawn tractor frame. The muffler and exhaust pipe to the muffler should be free of any new holes, which will decrease the back pressure to the engine and reduce power to the engine. Replace the muffler or exhaust pipe with a new one if needed. Both simply bolt on.

    • 2). Unscrew the flywheel housing on the top of the engine. Use the proper sized wrenches to unscrew the bolts around the perimeter of the flywheel housing and pull off the housing.

    • 3). Locate the governor next to the flywheel. The governor is a small, plastic flap next to the flywheel. Unscrew the single bolt attaching the governor to the engine block using the proper sized wrench. Unhook the rod and spring connecting the governor to the engine throttle. Remove the governor.

    • 4). Replace the flywheel housing cover and bolt it back down.

    • 5). Fill the gas tank with a high-octane gas that will burn faster and hotter. Use a 92 octane gas.
