What is a motion detection system?
Closely related to the functioning of an alarm system, a motion detector senses any motion within its field of vision. Motion detectors have proved to be of great benefit because of their high sensitivity towards movement of any kind.
How does it work?
This system is made up of sensors that sense any kind of movement around them and send out signals. They are capable of detecting both auditory and optical changes and are believed to cover an area from fifty feet to eighty feet.
Applications
Motion detectors are generally found on most security DVR systems these days. These detectors are automated and start recording once they detect any change in the surrounding. However the system does not just record the change instead it starts recording a few seconds before the motion, and a few seconds later too. These are termed as pre-alarm and post-alarm recordings. However these detectors are not merely for alarm purposes. Depending on the fashion in which the detectors have been triggered,these can be put to varied uses.
For instance, opening a door upon sensing some movement in the area, now this doesn't involve an alarm, does it? This application of motion detectors can be seen at grocery stores, hospitals etc. So besides enhancing and upgrading Security camera systems, as in besides its use for security purposes, motion detectors are functional in other areas too.
Setting up multiple detection zones, or keeping a count of the number passer-by's through the hallway, intrusion into a no-permit zone, the motion detectors can notify you of a potential hitch.

A motion detector comprises of four sensors that can further be categorized into 2 categories, namely active and passive. So while an active sensor sends out signals, the passive sensor simply monitors the changes in motion.
Sending out a rhythm of waves and measuring the reflection of the object in motion, the ultrasonic sensor is said to be the active sensor. This sensor can be found in microwaves, the only difference being in a microwave, the sensor sends out microwave pulses. The other sensor that is the passive sensor is the pir detector, or the passive infrared sensor.
