Immigration is the movement from one country to another of a non-resident of the latter in order to have a permanent residence.
For instance, United States immigration refers to the movement of non-Americans to the USA for the purpose of 'settling down'.
In order to get citizenship in the USA, the most convenient route is via the process of naturalization.
The basic requirement for being eligible for this process is to have stayed in the USA for at least five years, although some special cases might require the applicant to have knowledge of American history and government, as well as the English language.
There are many categories under which one can legally immigrate to the USA.
Let's take a look at some of the major ones.
Immediate relative: This is one category that allows the largest number of United States immigration every year.
It basically allows an American citizen to sponsor minors, parents and spouse in America as its citizens.
Family preference: American citizens can sponsor a specified number of relative for residency in the country.
The eligible individuals here are the siblings of American citizens, spouse and adult children.
However, there are a number of steps in this methodology, and there is a high chance that citizenship might even be denied.
Refugees/asylum: A certain number of people are allowed for United States immigration under this category on religious, political or humanitarian reasons.
In order to qualify for this category, the person has to show that his/her life in the present country of residence is in danger.
Employment-based: Individuals who have the required job skills that are currently in demand could be given citizenship based on the economic demands of the country.
But in this category as well, there is a limited number of immigrants that can be accommodated.
