How to Prosecute Credit Card Theft
- 1). Report your card stolen by calling your credit card company immediately -- most credit card companies and banks have a 24-hour emergency line you can call. The company will place a hold on your card so that no charges can be made. Most banks also have credit card protection services, so that you will not be held liable for any unauthorized charges made on the stolen card.
- 2). Ask your credit card company (if they don't do it automatically) to place an initial fraud alert on your credit report.
- 3). Follow up on your call by writing a letter to your credit card company with your account number, the date your card was stolen and the date you reported the incident by phone.
- 4). Submit a complaint to the Federal Trade Commission online (see 'Resources') or call 877-438-4338.
- 5). File a report in person with local police. Bring a copy of your FTC complaint form and its accompanying cover letter, and any other important documentation pertaining to the theft.
- 6). Go to the county police, then the state police if your local police won't file a report. Wait for law enforcement to prosecute your case.
