The Shih Tzu dog traces its roots to ancient China.
In fact, as a special breed whose ownership was once limited to royalty, known as Chinese Imperial dogs.
Perhaps the most interesting characteristic of these dogs was the fact that they were once used by Chinese emperors as body warmers.
Because of their long hair, proved to be efficient lap dogs that served dual purposes.
They were made to lie across the feet of the Emperor and Empress, as they took care of court business to keep their feet warm.
At times, they would also be made to sit on their owner's laps to serve as hand warmers.
That being said, you would think that when it comes to dealing with the cold, wouldn't have any problems.
Adult certainly learn to become more adept to the cold.
However, puppies, during their early years, tend to need a bit more help from their owners.
Since puppy born as incredibly small and fragile beings, more often than not, they need help when it comes to regulating their body temperature during cold winter months.
More so for young puppies that have just been separated from their litter.
Shih Tzu litters tend to sleep on top of each other upon birth.
They do this to generate heat amongst themselves.
Once they are separated from their mother as well as the rest of the litter, certain measures must be met to help your puppy adapt to its new environment.
During cold winter months, it would be especially convenient for your puppy to prepare safe and warm quarters for it.
This can be any confined but well aerated space, a crate, or even something as simple as a box.
The important thing is that you line it with some flannel blankets, anything washable for that matter.
This will definitely provide warmth to your pup.
Try to stay away from using newspapers as liners as the ink may contain chemicals that are poisonous.
Don't use wood shavings for warmth either as these wood shavings are easily ingested or inhaled by small puppies.
Finally, as an added measure, you can block the areas under and around door frames to prevent cold drafts from making your puppies feel uncomfortable.
Shih Tzus should be able to manage just fine through cold winter months.
Dogs of this breed have the type of hair that they do for a reason.
But always keep in mind that as puppies, they will be needing lots of help and guidance on your part.
