How to Clean Box Culverts
- 1). Gain access to the culvert. If the culvert hasn't been cleaned, remove debris from the entrance in order to gain access.
- 2). Stop the flow of water going into the culvert. Using stacked sandbags stops the water so you can get easier access.
- 3). Enter the culvert and ensure there are no wild or stray animals that have taken up residence. If there are, move out of the culvert and contact Animal Control.
- 4). Remove debris, mud, soil, rock and any other material that's blocking the culvert, using shovels if necessary. Put the material into wheelbarrows, haul it to a truck, and remove and dispose of the debris.
- 5). Remove the sandbags once cleaning is complete so that water flow returns to normal.
