How to Set Up a Kindle
- 1). Insert the small end of the USB cord that was provided with the Kindle into the bottom left USB port on the Kindle. This is the only USB port on the Kindle device.
- 2). Insert the other end of the Kindle USB cord into the wall charger adapter that was provided with the Kindle.
- 3). Plug the wall charger adapter into the wall and slide the power switch at the bottom right of the Kindle to turn the device on. The Kindle will begin charging. While the Kindle will normally have a partial charge when it arrives, it will not be fully charged and Amazon.com recommends charging it fully before setup.
Charging time may vary, but while charging occurs a lightning bolt will appear inside the battery meter on the upper right side of the Kindle screen, and the light on the bottom of the Kindle next to the "On" switch will be yellow. When the Kindle is fully charged, the lightning bolt disappears and the battery meter shows completely full. The light on the bottom of the Kindle next to the "On" switch will be green. - 4). Unplug the USB cord from both the Kindle and the wall. The Kindle will power off automatically at this point.
- 5). Slide the power switch on the bottom of the Kindle to the right. The Kindle home screen will appear.
- 6). Click "Menu." Click down on the five-way directional controller until "Settings" is underlined. Click the center of the controller to select Settings.
- 7). Click the "Register" link within the Settings menu. You will be prompted to confirm your Amazon.com account information, which is already filled in for you when your device arrives -- using the information that is in the Amazon.com account from which the Kindle was purchased.
If the Amazon.com account information is incorrect, click the "deregister" link to enter the correct information. - 8). Click down on the five-way controller to click "Ok." Your Kindle is now registered and linked to your Amazon.com account. With the setup now completed, you can begin reading on the device.
You can immediately begin using the Kindle by pressing the "Home" button. A list of items will appear. When your Kindle arrives, it will contain a Kindle User Guide, The New Oxford American Dictionary and a Welcome Letter From Amazon. It will also contain any items that you may have previously ordered to be delivered to your Kindle once the Kindle was registered.
