    • 1). Click the Windows "Start" button, then click on "Control Panel." Change the category view to "Large Icons."

    • 2). Click on "Mail," then on "E-mail Accounts." Select "View or change existing e-mail accounts," and click on "Next," then double-click your email account. A window will open with your email account details.

    • 3). View the information in the "Incoming mail server (POP3)" field, which is located in the "Server Information" section. The information will be similar to the following example: "pop.example.com." The "example" text will be replaced with the text of the actual mail server, such as "gmail."

    • 4). Click on the Windows "Start" button, type "Command Prompt" in the search text field, then click on "Command Prompt," which will be the first item in the list. This will launch a Windows Command Prompt.

    • 5). Type the following command, without quotation marks: "ping example.com" and press "Enter" on your keyboard. You need to replace "example.com" with the actual name of your server found in Step 3. This will check if the server is responsive. If the mail server is not responsive, you will receive the error "Request timed out," indicating the server is down.

    • 6). Wait for the mail server to return to functionality, which typically takes 24 hours if the mail server is undergoing maintenance. Keep trying to receive mail in Outlook to test if the server is responsive.
