    Flange Removal

    • 1). Shut off the water supply valve that leads to the toilet tank. Flush the toilet to drain the tank. Disconnect the supply line that leads from the valve to the toilet tank. Remove the toilet tank cover and set it aside.

    • 2). Remove the covers from a closet bolts. Remove the nuts, washers and cover bases from the closet bolts.

    • 3). Remove the toilet from the toilet flange and set it aside. Clean away any remaining wax from the old wax ring from under the toilet and around the flange.

    • 4). Remove the closet bolts from the edge of the flange. If possible, remove the old flange from the closet bend pipe that leads to the sewer system.

    • 5). Break the old flange, if made of cast iron, with a hammer and cold chisel to remove it from the closet bend pipe. Take care not to damage the closet bend.

    • 6). Remove the stainless steel bolts, if the flange uses a compression fitting. Pull the brass ring from the rubber gasket. Remove the rubber gasket and the flange body.

    • 7). Cut the closet bend pipe, if the flange is made of PVC pipe, with the hand-held rotary tool below the flange. Remove the old flange and glue a PVC connector and more PVC pipe to the closet bend pipe to achieve the proper height of the pipe.

    Install the New Flange

    • 1). Remove the stainless steel bolts on the new compression flange and disassemble the flange. Seat the flange body onto the closet bend pipe so that the flange sits down far enough to prevent the toilet from rocking when installed

    • 2). Place the rubber gasket into the flange body. Insert the brass ring into the rubber gasket. Replace the stainless steel bolts into the flange to seal it to the closet bend pipe.

    • 3). Set a new wax ring in the flange. Insert the closet bolts into the keyholes along the edge of the flange and align the holes so they match the holes in the toilet base.

    • 4). Position the toilet over the flange. Insert the closet bolts into the holes in the toilet base. Set the toilet outlet onto the wax ring and seat the toilet to the ring, firmly.

    • 5). Place the closet bolt cover bases, the washers and the nuts on the closet bolts. Tighten the nuts, carefully. Cut the excess from the closet bolts with the hack saw. Replace the closet bolt covers.

    • 6). Reconnect the water supply line to the toilet tank. Turn the water on to fill the tank. Flush the toilet and check for leaks. Replace the tank cover.
