Problems With Fences for Pet Containment

    Chain Link Fence

    • Chain link fence is a durable and economical fencing method. However, this fence has its drawbacks. If you live in a community setting, many Home Owner's Associations (HOA's) do not allow chain link fence to be erected because it is not attractive. If you are allowed to build this type of fence, make sure you get a height tall enough that your dog cannot jump over it and fortify the bottom with cement or some other substance so the dog cannot dig under.

    Privacy Fence

    • Privacy fence is an attractive fencing option that most HOA's will allow to be erected in a community setting. However, this type of fencing can be expensive. A privacy fence will allow you the maximum amount of seclusion and comes in various materials, such as metal, wood and vinyl. The same disadvantages with chain link apply to privacy fencing. A dog can jump over the fence if it is not tall enough to stop that from happening, or dogs can dig underneath. Privacy fence is also frustrating for dogs, because they cannot to see out to the noises they hear on the other side.

    Underground Fence

    • An underground fence affords you the least effort to install and can often be a do it yourself project. With underground fence you bury an electric wire in a trench in the ground a few inches deep, this wire attaches to a receiver that is normally kept inside the home to avoid the elements. The indoor receiver transmits a signal to a collar the dog wears around his neck, when the dog gets too close to the boundary the collar will give a warning beep and if the dog keeps going toward the boundary it will receive a "shock" similar to what you feel when you rub your feet across the carpet. This fence can be economical and allow you to keep your current landscaping but a dog must be trained on how to use this fence, you cannot just put them in backyard and expect them to know what to do. This type of fence is also susceptible to breaks in the line, which will render the fence useless if it does not complete a full loop. This type of fence will also not work when the electricity is out or the batteries in the collar are low.

    Wireless Fence

    • Wireless fence is a relatively new technology in the fencing market. This fence works much like the underground fence, except without a wire. The wireless transmitter creates an invisible barrier around your property; you set the desired containment area. This fence can be the most attractive to busy homeowners because it is truly "plug and play." Although it is slightly more expensive than the underground fence, the convenience can far outweigh the cost. This fencing option can be the most fickle though, as the barrier is wireless it can change slightly from day to day. While it will still give a warning beep before a shock, this fluctuation can be hard for a dog to adjust to.
