How to Stop Spores
- 1). Keep your home dry. Dampness is one of the greatest causes of mold developing. Ensure your home is free of excess moisture to keep mold spores from spreading. Run your heating system as often as possible, even if it's at a low temperature. Consistent airflow prevents dampness from setting in the walls of your house.
- 2). Check the pipes under your kitchen sink and in your bathroom for signs of leaking and subsequent mold development. Clean the pipes by mixing bleach with water and rubbing the affected areas thoroughly with a sponge. Wear gloves and safety goggles when using bleach as it is highly toxic.
- 3). Dry thoroughly any areas where mold was removed. Leaving moisture merely allows them to grow again.
- 4). Clean each room affected by mold separately, ensuring the doors are shut each time. Cleaning mold spores can cause them to become airborne, spreading to other areas of your home.
- 5). Examine the attic and basement for signs of excess moisture such as rotting wood or a cold, damp atmosphere. Basement and attic spaces are usually unheated, creating an efficient breeding ground for mold. If you have electrical outlets in these areas, turn on a portable heater at regular intervals to help get rid of dampness.
- 6). Install an air dehumidifier if the mold problem persists. Air dehumidifiers extract moisture from the air and decrease the likelihood of mold developing.
- 7). Check your refrigerator for any foods that are past their sell-by date. These foods release bacteria that cause mold to develop on the foods and on the surfaces of the refrigerator. Throw out any leftovers too if not consumed within a couple of days.
- 8). Spray air fresheners in areas affected by mold to get rid of the damp, musty odor. The smell can take some time to fade by itself, even after the mold is removed.
