Flapper Hair

  Flappers favored a short bob hairstyle. One method to get this is to get a bob haircut. This is not a practical option for girls that do not want to cut their hair for the sake of a costume. There are two options for girls with longer hair. The first is to get a wig with a bob hairstyle. The second is to wrap their hair into a head scarf to obscure the length. The head scarf is quite common for a flapper costume, so it makes a good option. A piece of red sequined fabric that matches the dress makes an excellent choice for this costume.
  
  

Flapper Dress

• The flapper dress is a fairly simple design. The dresses usually had short sleeves or were sleeveless, and the length of the skirt reached just past the knees and halfway down the calf. When standing, the knees should be covered, but part of the lower leg should still be showing. Flappers wore loose dresses, which gives a good deal of leeway for the size of the dress. Look for a bright shade of red for a flapper dress. Scarlet or carmine work quite well. Avoid darker shades, like maroon or dark cherry.
  
  It is cheaper and easier to find a dress at a thrift store than to make it. The dress is worn loosely enough that the sizing can be quite flexible. The skirt may need to be hemmed or sleeves shortened.
  
  

Flapper Jewelry

  The most common jewelry associated with the flapper costume is pearls. White pearls work the best with a red flapper costume. Wearing a few different lengths of pearl necklaces around the neck gives a nice, flapper style. One of the necklaces can also be wrapped around the wrist to make a matching bracelet.
  
  

Flapper Accessories

• There are several accessories traditionally associated with flappers. Scarves were quite commonly worn around the neck as a brighter accent piece. A white scarf works with a red dress. Another common choice is a cigarette holder. Hand fans also fit wonderfully with the costume.
