Designing the Perfect Roof Garden

When looking to buy or rent a property, most people think- is there a garden out back or out front? They don't necessarily think about garden space on the roof. But rooftop gardens are some of the most beautiful, special and secret places. Moreover, they are a great space saver, especially in big cities where there is little room for green.

Depending on the type of space you have, there are a variety of things that you can do on your rooftop.

1. If you have a rooftop terrace:

If your roof looks more like a terrace than it does a garden, but you're looking to add some green to it, then start by building in some planter boxes and plant some flowers. You can even start a little vegetable garden. You might want to break up the boxes with a few small trees, and maybe some large potted plants. Add a table, some chairs and BBQ and you're ready for a summer of fun!

2. If your roof already has forest growing out of it:

If you notice that your roof has old trees, bushes, and grass growing on it then take it the extra mile and create a little secret garden. Plant shrubs, put up a gazebo, buy a couple of wooden benches and some rod iron chairs. All you need is a stone fountain or pond and you've pretty much got the most romantic place on earth, sitting on your roof!

3. If cost is no object:

If you've got money to spend and are lucky enough to live in a place that's warm all year, why not put a pool on your roof? Buy some chaise lounges, a few umbrellas and enjoy the summer of your life. With that set up you can have great parties and get a fabulous tan.

4. If it's for commercial use:

Restaurants, bars and nightclubs that have rooftop gardens tend to be a big hit, especially during summer months. Dancing, drinking, and dining on a beautiful rooftop is a wonderful way to spend an evening. There's really nothing that says summer like outdoor music.

Rooftop gardens are a great place to entertain, to escape and to relax. If you have the space it's worth doing something exceptional with it. Find something that you love, that you want to do a lot and then build it to suit your taste. There's no point in having a rooftop swimming pool if you don't like to swim, so choose something that reflects your taste and your lifestyle.
