How to Select Turfgrass
- 1). Decide if you will need a cool season grass or warm season grass. If you live in a climate with warm summers and cold winters, you will need to pick a cool season grass. Cool season grasses include red fescue and Kentucky bluegrass. Southern areas of the U.S. and climates with mild winters will need a warm season grass such as Bahia grass or Bermudagrass.
- 2). Consider how much traffic your lawn receives. Look for cool or warm season grasses that can handle your traffic. Bermuda grass is a good choice for a high-traffic area in a warm season climate.
- 3). Decide on how much maintenance you are willing to give to your turfgrass. Some turfgrasses are much harder to maintain than others. If you cannot dedicate time every day for watering your lawn, consider a drought-tolerant grass such as zoysia.
- 4). Determine how much money you can spend on a new lawn. Grass seed is much less expensive than sod. Combining a cheaper grass seed with one you want that costs more may be an acceptable cost-efficient option.
