    120 Film

    • 120 film is 6 cm, or 2 1/4 inches wide. This makes a bigger negative than a 35mm camera, which is 1 X 1.35 inches. The bigger negative produces better quality enlargements. Because of the larger negative, the film grain is smaller and sharper when enlarged. This format is popular with professional photographers.

    6 X 6 Medium Format Cameras

    • The most popular, medium-format cameras were twin-lens reflexes. They had two lenses, one above the other. The upper lens was for viewing and focusing. The bottom lens took the picture. They made a square 6-inch X 6-inch negative. These were widely used and popular with studio and fashion photographers. Single lens reflex cameras were more expensive, but also popular.

    6 X 7 Medium Format Cameras

    • This film format camera uses a rangefinder or a single lens reflex for viewing and focusing. The negative image is rectangular, close to 8-inch X 10-inch proportions.
