The Apple iPhone 4S - New Improvements
The Apple iPhone 4S has now been revealed to the world, with sales set to start mid-October 2011 in most major markets.
So, free of all the new iPhone rumours and speculation, we can now look at the improvements found in the new handset.
Appearance Looks and style are always an important factor in Apple products and many were expecting the next Apple smartphone release to be an iPhone 5 with an all new casing and outward appearance, but what we got in the 4S is more of an internal refresh.
As a result the iPhone 4G doesn't change in its outward appearance at all over the previous model.
Although some may have wanted a revised casing, we're not too disappointed as the current iPhone is made from premium materials such as glass and steel which results in a great looking device.
There is no point in change for the sake of it.
The only external change, albeit hard to spot, concerns the antennas, a previous issue that dogged the iPhone 4 shortly after release resulting in Apple having to issue free bumpers to cure reception problems.
The revised 4S antenna has now been split into two separate sections, with the phone being able to automatically switch between the two to enable better reception or to send and receive data at the same time without speed compromises.
The screen size sticks at 3.
5 inches and keeps the retina display resolution of 960 x 640 pixels.
Although many of the rival phones from the likes of HTC and Samsung feature 4.
3 inch screens, they do not match the resolution of the iPhone 4S and thus don't appear quite as crisp when reading text or viewing high-resolution media.
One further advantage is that the 3.
5 inch screen size allows for a small casing, something which can be welcome in a device you're carrying around all day.
The smaller screen also makes fewer demands on the battery.
Combined network technologies The new iPhone contains both the GSM and CDMA network technologies.
Previously Apple has chosen to produce two versions of its smartphone models.
This serves to streamline operations for Apple as well as allowing owners to switch between network providers that use each system without the need to change handsets.
This development will normally only be of interest to US customers as this is where the CDMA standard is widely used, although visitors wishing to use their Apple handsets in the US will now be presented with a wider variety of network provider options.
iPhone 4S A5 Processor The latest version of the iPhone gets the A5 dual core processor first seen in the iPad 2.
In the handsets launch event, Apple's new CEO Tim Cook claimed that the new processor is twice as fast as that of its predecessor with graphics performance now seven times greater than before.
Great news for games developers and players.
This new processor is a much-needed addition to the Apple smartphone range.
Leading competitors such as the Samsung Galaxy S2, Motorola Atrix, LG Optimus 2X and the HTC Sensation all now sport dual-core processors and thus make the existing Apple offering seem a little lacking in the power and specification stakes.
No 4G for iPhone 4S Although the 4G mobile broadband technology is not incorporated in the device, Apple have claimed that hardware improvements will serve to double the mobile data speeds of its predecessor to practically match 4G speeds.
The technology driving this improvement is probably the HSPA+ standard.
Real world tests will surely be able to verify this rather ambitious claim.
