What is Going on With My Puppy? Separation anxiety in puppies can present itself in many different ways and to many different degrees.
Some puppies have mild symptoms, while other pups have moderate or severe symptoms.
But whatever the degree of separation anxiety that your puppy may be suffering from, it can be difficult to think about the emotional pain he is going through while he is alone.
Do you ever wish for just 5 minutes a day, that your beloved puppy could talk to you? Wouldn't that make life so much easier? You would know instantly just what he is trying to tell you, and at the same time, you could also reason with him to help ease his lonely heart.
I bet you would be surprised to learn that what you thought he was saying was quite different than what he was actually trying to tell you.
Let's say that you cannot leave a room without your new puppy screaming bloody murder.
You believe he is saying, "Mommy, please come back, don't leave me, I love you sooooo much.
Let's play, let's eat, I have to go out, I'm thirsty, PLEASE COME BACK.
" He probably is really screaming, "Hey, where did my pack go? I'm alone, I'm scared, I don't know what to do, where did that lady go, the one that smells good and always gives me treats? Maybe she knows where they went.
" Maybe your new pup starts running a marathon through the whole house peeing all the way just because he saw you take your keys out.
Maybe he is chewing the furniture, biting himself when he is overly anxious.
Maybe you think he just wants to play, or is so nervous that you are leaving that he tries to hide.
Maybe what he is really thinking is that if he pees all through the house or if he is really bad, maybe you will stay home and clean my mess.
Separation anxiety in puppies is normal to a degree, they are small helpless babies that can get scared quite easily.
But it is up to us to teach them that being alone is a good thing, and not something to be scared of.
