    Obtaining an Ohio HVAC license

    • 1). Open the Ohio Test Application Kit PDF file (see Resources). Print the application and Homeland Security DMA page, and fill in your information completely. You must be 18 years of age or older, and a citizen of the United States (or a legal resident) with no criminal history. The state of Ohio also requires all applicants to submit a Certificate of Liability insurance with a minimum of $500,000 in coverage with their application.

    • 2). Make copies of all the necessary documents to support the information you provided in the application such as W-2s, tax returns, payroll stubs, permits, letters of recommendation, license and contractor liability insurance policy. Cross out your Social Security number all on supporting documents.

    • 3). Take the application to a notary public and have it notarized.

    • 4). Mail the completed application, Homeland Security DMA paper, documentation and a check in the amount of $25 made payable to "Treasurer-State of Ohio" to the following address:

    • 5). Submit your background check information once you have been approved by the state of Ohio to sit for the HVAC licensing test.

    • 6). Schedule a time to take the HVAC licensing test once you have passed the state and federal background check.
