    • 1). Clean the area with soap, such as dish-washing detergent, and water to remove dirt and oil. Use a sponge or rag. Allow the area to dry. Sand lightly with 220-grit sandpaper. A pole sander will make the job easier. Wipe away any sanding dust with a damp cloth.

    • 2). Use spackling or drywall compound to fill in the grooves if you prefer smooth walls. Allow to dry according to manufacturer's instructions. Sand for a smooth texture before priming the walls. This step is optional.

    • 3). Mask off the baseboard, ceiling and trim with painter's tape. Place drop cloths over floors or furniture. Pour primer into the paint roller tray.

    • 4). Apply stain-blocking primer using a 3/4-inch roller cover. Use brushes to cut in the primer along the masked areas. Allow the primer to dry completely. Primer should dry at least 24 hours before you apply the paint coat.

    • 5). Apply interior latex paint using the paint roller. If you want, you can use a 4-inch paintbrush to go over small sections. Move from ceiling to floor using long strokes. Allow to dry and paint the section again using the roller. This is not necessary if you prefer a smoother surface. Allow the paint to dry completely. Now you can decorate your new space.
