The saying, "Picture postcard perfect" describes Maleny, in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, perfectly. In fact, you will find postcards of Maleny taken from the hills at the back of the town that make you wonder if such a beautiful place actually exists. Well, it does. Maleny is in the Blackall Range overlooking the Glasshouse Mountains. At an elevation of about 1500 feet (450 meters) above sea level, it's a subtropical haven in tropical Queensland.

Once you have seen it for yourself, it will come as no surprise that travel is the largest industry in Maleny. It's easy to get to. Halfway between Brisbane and Noosa Heads, it is less than an hour's drive from either of these major centers, but it feels like it's in a magical world all its own. Initially, Maleny was a timber town. After the stands of trees were cut, it became mainly a dairy town. After its heavenly location was found by those who wanted a break from the hustle and bustle of the big city, it became a refuge for those who prefer a slower pace of life.

If you want to slow down and get back to nature, then you will discover Maleny perfect for your needs. First take a while to get to know the locals in this friendly village. They will tell you the best places to go and explore in and around the town.

Maleny is an ideal place to base yourself if you want to get out and explore the countryside on foot or on a mountain bike. One great place to go to just near Maleny is Kondalilla National Park. The word "Kondalilla" is an aboriginal word that roughly translates as "rushing waters." That should give you a clue as to what to expect to discover in the Park. Kondalilla Falls plunges 300 vertical feet (90 meters) straight down into the valley below. One of the local's favorite things to do on a hot summer's day is go to the rock pool on the head of the falls and cool off.

Then there are all the other towns and villages surrounding Maleny in the Blackall Range to explore. Each of them has its own unique flavor, but all of them have one thing in common. This beautiful area attracts creative artists and artisans from throughout Australia. Regardless of whether you're in Maleny, Montville or Kenilworth, you will discover fascinating arts and crafts shops, fresh organic produce and scrumptious homemade meals. Kenilworth was voted the friendliest town in Queensland in the year 2000, but the same thing could be said of just about any of the villages and towns in the region as well.

The artistic and environmental sensitivities of the locals may be seen in Maleny accommodation options. Imagine staying the night in a treehouse bungalow looking over the Glasshouse Mountains. Or how about a stunningly landscaped bungalow located in hills, complete with its own spa? These are just a couple of examples of the unusual accommodations you will find in Maleny. The local craftsmanship makes these Maleny accommodation options truly luxurious, while at the same time eco-friendly. Visit Maleny and stay awhile. You will soon discover why the locals are so friendly and content.
