Hollister, CA: Lowering Cholesterol While Still Having A Good Steak Once In A While: View From A Private Duty Caregiver Serving, Carmel, Carmel Valley, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Gilroy, Gonzalez, Greenfield, Hollister, King City, Marina, Monterey, Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach, Salinas, San Juan Bautista, Seaside & Soledad CaliforniaMany seniors struggle with high cholesterol and it's tempting to eat comfort foods which are sometimes high in fat and cholesterol. Those who like to have a good steak or a piece of cheese now and again will be happy to find that these things don't need to be cut out of the diet entirely in order to get cholesterol readings under control. A new study published this week in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that eating more plant-based fat and protein lowered cholesterol more than one which was low in saturated fats. Participants were divided into two groups, one which ate a diet low in saturated fat and another which added nuts, soy, sticky fibers like barley and oats and plant-based margarine spreads to their normal routine. The group which added more plant-based foods lowered their LDL (bad cholesterol) by 13% more than the group which had the low saturated fat. The study is important because some seniors have a difficult time with their appetite, and when presented with a fat-free diet they may not eat much at all. We went through this with my grandmother. Since she was already in her 90's the Doctor told us to feed her whatever she wanted, just get her to eat! This isn't always the case, however. Always consult your physician before making a radical change in your diet, but take heart in the fact that you can develop a healthy menu which still includes some appetizing high fat dishes.http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424053111903461304576526493588523256.html?mod=googlenews_wsjAbout Richard Kuehn & Family inHome Caregiving of Monterey:After more than a decade of caregiving, both in a professional environment and for a 97 year old family member I was dissatisfied with service from local caregiving agencies.
