    • 1). Rinse the bucket out to remove any dust and debris that may have accumulated at the store.

    • 2). Drill a 1/4-inch hole into the side of the bucket, about 1/2 inch up from the bottom edge. Drill a second hole on the opposite side, the same distance up. Work slowly with the drill to avoid cracking the plastic.

    • 3). Run a 1/4-inch bead of silicone all the way around the top lip of the bucket, keeping the silicone as even as possible. Make sure there are no gaps in the line of silicone.

    • 4). Hammer the bucket lid in place with the rubber mallet.

    • 5). Turn the bucket over and run a second line of silicone around the bottom edge of the bucket.

    • 6). Stand the bucket upright in the center of the flower pot saucer and stack a few bricks, books or other heavy objects on top of the bucket to press the whole thing together. Allow the silicone to dry for at least 24 hours or as long as recommended by the package directions.

    • 7). Unscrew the top cap and fill the bucket with water. Some water may overflow the saucer until the cap is replaced and a vacuum forms within the bucket. This is normal and should stop as soon as you screw the cap tightly back into place.

    • 8). Place the waterer in a flat, level location in the chicken coop.
