How to Do Calligraphy on Envelopes
- 1). Fill a glass with water and set up all materials within convenient reach of one another. When dipping the calligraphy pen into the ink, it will be important to quickly be able to press the pen onto the envelope, as the ink can dry quickly. This can clog the calligraphy pen and prevent even, quick flow of ink. If you are right handed, set up the paint at the upper right side of your writing surface and have the scrap piece of paper close by.
- 2). Dip the calligraphy pen into the ink for one to two seconds. Before attempting to write on the envelope, test the pen on the scrap piece of paper. After you dip a calligraphy pen in ink, it can be quite full and the first stroke can be very bold and heavy. To attain even saturation of ink throughout, test the pen on the scrap piece of paper each time after dipping the pen into the ink.
- 3). Hold the pen at a 45-degree angle and make the first stroke onto the paper. Relax while you are writing and use a gentle hand to prevent ink from blotting. It is important to be relaxed so your writing can flow in free form. Calligraphy is an art form and although there is a certain style to follow, it is okay to improvise and make it your own.
- 4). Clean the pen periodically throughout the writing session by dipping it in water and drying it with a paper towel. If the pen becomes blocked with dry ink, it will not write as well.
- 5). Make strokes going down or to the right. Never push the pen away from you as this would result in an undesirable pen stroke. Practice the calligraphy alphabet and your letters will become better with time.
- 6). Use a ruler to make straight, faint pencil lines across the envelope if you experience any problems with words slanting upward or downward.
