    • 1). Plant the orange tree in a sunny location. Orange trees need sunshine to grow and it helps the soil to dry out.

    • 2). Allow the top 1/2 inch of soil to dry out before you water. When you water, only give enough to moisten the soil. Do not allow the pot to remain in water. Always empty the saucer under the pot to eliminate a gnat breeding spot.

    • 3). Mix a natural bacillus toxin in the water to kill the gnat larvae. This toxin is sold in some garden supply centers, in garden catalogs and online. Use this in the water when watering your plant. Read and follow label directions for amounts and how often to use.

    • 4). Spray the orange tree with a natural insect spray safe for orange trees. Read and follow label directions,

    • 5). Insert sticky stakes by the orange tree or hang sticky tape nearby. The fruit flies are drawn to the yellow color and when any part of them comes in contact with the sticky tape or stake, they become stuck. When the stakes or tapes are full, throw them into the trash and leave for the garbage collector to take.

    • 6). Remove the old fruit from the tree and throw them away. Fruit flies are drawn to rotting fruit as a place to lay their eggs. The fruit provides food for the larvae to feed upon.
