How To Keep Your Gums Healthy

Taking care of your teeth and gums plays an important part in maintaining good oral health . However, according to an article published in the Journal of Periodontology, at least 35 percent of adults in the U.S. aged between 30 and 90 have gum disease.

Gum disease is mainly caused by various factors such as poor hygiene, deficiencies in vital nutrients, diseases such as diabetes, viral infections, AIDS and leukemia, exposure to poisonous or harmful substances that include tobacco smoke, certain drugs and use of birth control pills.

The major cause of gum disease is poor hygiene, due to which plaque gets accumulated along the gum line. This could, ultimately, result in inflammation of the gums, a serious condition called Gingivitis. If Gingivitis is not properly treated, it will eventually lead to periodontal disease, in which the gums will recede, teeth will loosen and finally fall out. Unhealthy gums are also associated with several kinds of diseases such as heart disease, clogged arteries, stroke, premature birth, and diabetes.

How to prevent Gum disesase

Vitamin C plays a significant role in preventing gum disease. Deficiency of Vitamin C could lead to severe Gingivitis, bleeding gums, and loosening of teeth. Therefore, a combination of proper brushing and intake of food that contains Vitamin C ensures the best results. Folic acid or Vitamin B is yet another vitamin important for the maintenance of healthy gums and the surface tissues in the mouth. Vitamin B is abundantly found in fresh green leafy vegetables and yeast. Certain other nutrients that are important for gum health include Vitamin A, Zinc, Vitamin E, Selenium, and Flavonoids.

Some more tips:

Try to avoid smoking, alcohol and consumption of other beverages

Always avoid eating lollipops and hard candies

Properly brush your teeth after every meal. However, brush gently so that no harm is caused to the enamel on your teeth.

Make it a routine to brush and floss at least twice a day.

Thoroughly rinse your mouth in the morning and at night with a fluoride rinse.

Get regular dental check ups.
