Simple Planting Instructions

    • 1). Prepare your gardening bed in the early spring after the last frost. Break any soil that is larger than a half dollar with a tiller. Remove any weeds or unwanted grass growth by hand-pulling or digging up the vegetation.

    • 2). Conduct a soil pH test on the yard. Purchase a soil pH testing kit from your local gardening supply store. Follow the directions accordingly. All plants need to have a specific pH range in order to absorb the soil's nutrients. Growing plants outside their range will leave them susceptible to fungal infections or malnutrition. Create your plant list based on the existing pH range and your region's plant hardiness zone.

    • 3). Check your seed packet to find out what depth that you need to plant your seeds. The seed packet should indicate the depth and spacing for your plants. Press the seed down into the soil and cover with the recommended amount of soil.

    • 4). Plant container-grown shrubs, plants or trees by digging a hole that is twice the size as the plant's root ball and at the same depth as the plant has been planted in the container. Place the plant in the hole and pack soil around the base.

    • 5). Water the plants and seeds thoroughly. The ground should be moist, but not saturated. Spread 6 inches of mulch around the plant to lock in moisture and keep weeds at bay.
