How to Make Cedar Shutters
- 1). Measure a length of 48 inches on each of the six cedar boards. Draw a line across the board from side to side using the pencil.
- 2). Cut the boards along the mark line, and set aside.
- 3). Take four of the remaining 24-inch smaller pieces, and starting at one end, measure a length of 18 inches. Draw a line across the board from side to side.
- 4). Smooth the boards with the medium sandpaper. Follow with the fine sandpaper until the all of the boards are smooth. Wipe with a soft cloth.
- 5). Place three of the 48-inch boards side by side on a level surface. Check the wood pattern to see if it is what you want. Interchange boards until a desired combination is found.
- 6). Move the boards slightly apart, and apply glue. Move boards together and clamp. Repeat for the other three 48-inch boards. Allow to dry. Remove the clamps when the glue is dry.
- 7). Measure 12 inches down from the top of the glued boards, and draw a mark. Measure 12 inches up from the bottom, and draw a mark.
- 8). Find the center of the batten at each end. Place the battens horizontally along the 12-inch mark lines with the center over the line. Clamp in place. Repeat for the other shutter. Turn the shutters over.
- 9). Drill three holes through the batten. Each centered over the board underneath. Repeat for each batten. Screw in the screws.
