    • 1). Mix 6 parts organic compost, 3 parts clean topsoil, 1 part fine, light sand and 1 part peat or sphagnum peat moss. Turn the ingredients over until they're well mixed to produce a light and nutritious mix that retains moisture for seeds.

    • 2). Fill starter pots or egg cartons with this mix for planting. Push seeds 1 inch deep into the starter mix at a rate of one seed per pot.

    • 3). Put pots in areas where they'll get full sun all day for seed germination. Sprinkle each pot with water from a watering can to wet the surface. Always use a watering can for seeds to avoid displacing soil or the seeds themselves.
