  North Conway, New Hampshire is a great destination for pet-friendly--especially dog-friendly--travel, because it is in the heart of New England's White Mountains, with dozens of hiking trails, including 100 miles of the Appalachian Trail. With rivers, streams, and ponds galore, the area is dog paradise. A year-round resort, North Conway is a pet-friendly community; many of the myriad shops, restaurants, and galleries put water bowls on the sidewalk in the summer for canine visitors. Folks traveling with a ferret or parrot will also feel welcome. New Hampshire has a statewide leash law, so no "at large" pets allowed.

  This motel is based in a big, red and white farmhouse, with charming gingerbread on the eves. Built in 1810, owners have since added 10 cottages to the property. Both rooms and cottages have warm pine floors and handmade quilts for cozy ambiance, plus all the modern accessories: full bathrooms, TV, small refrigerator, coffee maker, and microwave; some rooms have gas or log fireplaces, and pets are welcome in many of the cottages. Advanced reservations for travelers with pets are recommended, since the pet cabins fill up quickly, and a refundable $50 deposit is required for pet cabins.

  This motel is not open in the winter, but it welcomes travelers and their pets from April through the famous New England fall foliage season. The Mount Madison specializes in moose tours--daily family-friendly excursions to view these magnificent mammals in nature. Completely refurbished in 2007, the motel has 32 rooms, all with cheery comforters, wireless Internet, televisions, microwaves, fridges, and coffee makers. A heated pool and outdoor Jacuzzi overlook the beautifully landscaped property. Pets stay free and are very welcome, but the staff requests that visitors call ahead so they can choose the right room for your group.
