    Clogged Drains

    • Dealing with a clogged drain, whether it is the toilet, bathtub or a sink, is a task that may involve a simple procedure or is sometimes a bit more complicated. All depends on the type of clog. Flush toilets are dependent on gravity to pull the waste down the sewer pipe. When the trap section becomes clogged and the toilet is flushed, there is no place for the fresh water to go so it will sometimes overflow the bowl, making more of a mess than a clogged sink; however, the solution is often the same in both cases.

    Hot Water

    • For clogged sinks and toilets, adding boiling hot water is an easy solution that may serve to break up the clog and flush it down the drain. Adding dish soap to the clog before the hot water is also helpful. The soap lubricates the clog as the hot water dissolves it and flushes it away. If overflowing water is part of the problem, bale some of it out prior to pouring in the hot water so you don't compound the issue. On sinks, the addition of white vinegar and baking soda to the hot water is another additive that helps unclog drains.

    Plunging

    • Using a plunger on a toilet is another quick fix when it works. Ensure that you are using a plunger specifically designed for commodes as there are different types of plungers. If the water is overflowing the toilet, bale some of it out prior to plunging, otherwise you will have more of a mess on your hands. Press the plunger against the drain hole in the bowl of the toilet, and press down and up. Start slowly and increase tempo as necessary to remove the clog. Use this same method for plunging a sink with the appropriate type of plunger.

    Chemicals

    • Commercial chemicals should be considered a last resort for sink and toilet clogs. Depending on the type of pipes in your home, chemicals have the potential to damage pipes and fixtures. Never use a plunger when using a chemical drain product. Always read and follow label directions, and never mix different brand products, which may cause harmful fumes to form.
