    • 1). Collect all of your unused leftovers and other kitchen scraps in a bucket. Keep the lid tight on your bucket at all times to prevent odors in the kitchen. Do not put meat products into your compost. Dump these scraps into your compost bin daily and clean the bucket with mild, liquid dish soap and water scrubbing the bucket with a nylon brush if necessary.

    • 2). Cut your lawn weekly with a mulching mower that is equipped with a bag. Run your mower over fallen leaves or a bale of straw you have broken apart and scattered on your lawn during the off-season. Dump the contents of the mower bag beside the compost bin.

    • 3). Measure the depth of the kitchen compost with a ruler. Add three times as much lawn mulch as there are kitchen scraps to the compost bin. Allow the compost to sit in the bin. Stir the compost bin with a pitch fork three days after the lawn clippings are added. Combine the ingredients thoroughly. Dig deep and bring as much of the bottom layers to the top as you can while moving the ingredients from the center of the pile to the outside perimeter to distribute the heat of the compost.

    • 4). Switch to a new compost bin each winter. Continue turning the contents of the original bin until spring. Take the contents of the old compost bin a week before planting time and scatter the rich, newly formed soil from those degraded products to your garden. Repeat the process for a constant supply of top soil for your garden.

    • 5). Clean your used compost bin with mild, liquid dish soap, water and a nylon scrub brush and allow it to sit undisturbed for the remainder of the season. Scrub your compost bin with soap, water and the scrub brush. Rinse out your compost bin with clean water and allow it to air dry before use at the beginning of the new season.
