How Can You Amend Your Filing Status After You File Your Taxes as Married Filling Separately?
- 1). Obtain a copy of Form 1040X, which is used to file an amended return. Use Form 1040X to adjust your income, deductions, credits and filing status, if necessary.
- 2). Alter the filing status on page one of the form. Simply select the “Married Filing Jointly” status under the address portion in the section “Amended Return Filing Status.”
- 3). Complete the rest of the form. If there are any other adjustments to make, enter these in the other sections of Form 1040X. On page two, write an explanation for the changes you made.
- 4). Submit Form 1040X to the IRS. You cannot file Form 1040X electronically, so you must sign and date page two of the form, and send it to the address listed in the Form 1040X instructions. It usually takes the IRS 8 to 12 weeks to process an amended return.
