Community Development

Community development grants are given out to help bring up minority communities and facilitate better economic and welfare opportunities. These grants are issued for a variety of purposes some of which include:

Preserving and safeguarding war field lands and giving out substantial funds for carrying out various surverying and educational activities that would promote economic welfare.

Aiding local economies to become more aggressive and independent and providing grants for self sustenance and social and economic welfare. This would help in improving the situation of tribal groups and establish better stability.

Similarly, the intent of the legislation was to provide a "solution" to Florida's needs for delivery of capital infrastructure to service projected growth without overburdening other governments and their taxpayers. In a statement released late last year, the U.S. Housing and Urban Development Department (HUD) announced that the city of Monroe, Louisiana would be receiving some of that funding. The HUD money was allocated specifically for low-income housing and community development projects in Monroe and the surrounding area.

A total of $1.45 million was awarded to the city in the form of Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) and HOME Investment Partnership funding. The city's Planning and Urban Development Department already hosted an informational meeting for organizations that are qualified to apply for CDBG and HOME funds.

It can also be said that community development is a form of social justice. Our religious traditions speak clearly about the injustices of poverty, of war and of oppression of the powerless. Answering this call often leads students to involvement in justice issues like eliminating poverty and hunger, ending wars, empowering women or welcoming immigrants. Community development-building strong and liberating communities in which the economy is available to all, in which every member is a valued contributor, and in which access to health care, education and secure housing is a mandate-fulfills the social justice vision.

They do this through community initiatives which give health care to the underserved communities through the local clinics and medical professionals. They also do it through medical supply recovery, which would include the collection and the distribution of medical supplies. Lastly, they carry out their mission through global service learning, which would include conducting medical student programs that are focused on the cultural competencies in a health setting.
