How to Coach Someone to Be an Effective Team Player
- 1). To be a teammate, clear and strong interpersonal communication is a must. A team player needs to be willing to contribute ideas and offer solutions to tough problems, without fear of being embarrassed or criticized by other members of his team.
- 2). Communication and listening skills go hand in hand. To work effectively on a team, a person needs to go the extra mile when listening, trying to see things from the speaker's perspective. In teamwork, a person needs to listen with depth before formulating conclusions and reactions.
- 3). Indicate the importance of passion. When you're part of a team, you need to have a healthy level of enthusiasm when it comes to accomplishing the group's vision and goals. If you're apathetic and detached from your team's vision, you're unlikely to have the drive to work hard and see things through.
- 4). To work effectively on a team, a person needs to understand that there is no room for selfishness. When you're on a team, other people depend on you to get things done and mean what you say. As a team member, a person needs to always go out of her way to fulfill her obligations.
- 5). Teamwork is all about collaboration and cooperation. To get things done on a team, a person has to be able to effectively and harmoniously work directly alongside other people in the pursuit of a common goal. Cooperation involves taking constructive criticism, helping others out and problem solving.
- 6). Positive team atmospheres thrive on mutual respect. On a team, you are never going to be exactly like everyone else around you. To make this work, a team player needs to have a strong appreciation for what makes others different from him, from skill sets to religion.
- 7). In guiding someone on how to be a team player, never forget the concepts of determination and perseverance. In life, some of the most rewarding things are the hardest to get. If a person gives up too easily and isn't willing to put in the hard work and time to achieve things, the rest of his team will suffer for it.
