    • 1). Examine various makes and models of vehicles to determine what you're interested in. Deciding what you want to buy before starting your search narrows it down, saving time and money.

    • 2). Locate rebuildable cars for sale. Visit local salvage yards. View the cars they have for sale that you can rebuild. Also, purchase your local newspaper and read the classified ads for the cars for sale. Online sites such as American Auto Inc., Action Salvage and AR Auto offer rebuildable cars for sale as well.

    • 3). Get the vehicle identification number, or VIN, make and model from any car you consider buying. Use this information and perform a vehicle history search. This provides information about the damage the car received.

    • 4). Drive the vehicle if possible. This allows you to determine whether any motor or transmission problems are present. Also, have a mechanic look at the car and diagnose any engine problems.

    • 5). Check prices for the parts you need to rebuild the car. This is an indication of how much money you are going to spend fixing the car.

    • 6). Buy the car and obtain a bill of sale and title for the rebuildable car. Obtaining a title, even if it is a salvage title, ensures the person selling the car owns it and the vehicle is not stolen.
