Teens Under Pressure
Teens are under more pressure than ever to conform to their group and 'be cool.
' This being cool is sometimes very dangerous and, in some cases, fatal.
Most teenagers do not consider this fact before drinking.
This is commonly attributed to their feeling of invincibility - this thought that they cannot be hurt can cause devastation and destruction.
And, these problems that arise from teenage drinking not only affect them individually, but their family as well.
The scariest part about teenage drinking is that most will participate in it at least once or more.
Not all teens become alcoholics, but that is not the point.
Teens are not well developed enough mentally to handle the physical impairment of alcohol.
Therefore, inebriation is much more frequent to where a teen is in danger of being injured or cause injury to others.
In many cases, these injuries are the result of a car crash when a licensed teen decides to get behind the wheel of a car or hop on a motorcycle when drunk.
Parents must warn their teens about this and explain to them that people die.
Most schools have drug and alcohol programs that prepare the students and educate them.
All parents should get involved in these programs and back their teens 100% in their participation.
Not only do many teens end up in car accidents when they drink, some injury others intentionally due to the numbing of their inhibitions.
It is sad to see the number of teens locked up in jail for violent crimes or driving while they were drunk; if they had to do it all over again, most would choose not to.
This is another effective strategy that parents have.
No teenager wants to sit in jail.
So, if the parent(s) bring this possibility up, the teen will be less likely to drink excessively.
This is not to say he/she will not try alcohol but they have a much better chance to stay out of a vehicle if they are drunk or if someone that they are with is about to drive drunk.
Parents however are key in educating their teen children on the facts about drinking alcohol and what some of the affects are.
Mothers and/or fathers should explain that they will not tolerate drinking in the home but will come pick the teen up if he/she has been drinking or if someone operating a vehicle has.
The teens must feel as though they can come clean about what they are doing without fear of punishment.
If the teen feels as though he/she cannot communicate with the parent(s), he/she will shut down and hide their drinking which is much more dangerous.
