Tips to prevent robberies at homes during Vacation

Before you go on vacation:

- Make sure you don’t have any items waiting to be received. Be wary of unregistered sellers.

- Always keep the door closed. Invest in a good lock and install peepholes.

- In the evening, if possible, keep the entrance to the house lighted. It is better to see and be seen. If your house is lit on the outside and the lights are off on the inside, the thief can be seen and but he can not see inside the house.

When you go on vacation:

- Use automatic timers to turn the lights, radios or televisions on and off.

- Ask a neighbor you trust, to collect the daily mail, newspapers and deliveries, and park the car in your garage while you are away.

- Leave a radio on, preferably tuned to a station with talk shows and programs with low volume. This will give the impression of a conversation taking place inside the house.

- Ask your neighbor, to daily change the position of the curtains and blinds of your house (to give the appearance of an inhabited house).

- Keep the watering system of your lawn on auto timer.

- Do not give out your vacation plans.

- Do not leave items of great value in the house; move them to a safe place while you are away.

- Leave your keys, only with people on whom you have absolute confidence.

- Have documentation to support your belongings.

- Mark valuable items with their ID Numbers. Place protection in the access points, such as doors, windows, etc.

- Do not leave the key hidden outside your home. Insurance companies do not pay if the theft has not been committed with violence and force.

- If you have voice mail, keep it on so as to ensure that you receive everybody’s messages, while on vacation.

Please do not give your information through a recorded message like "You are calling the ‘LOPEZ’ residence, we are not at home, so please leave a message after the BEEP, and we will call back once we return" OR "Sorry the mailbox is full"! It’s better to leave a message like "At the moment we are not able to receive your call, so please leave a message after the BEEP".

When you return from vacation:

- Upon arriving at your house, take the keys in your hand and enter without delay.

- When you arrive at your house and if it is obvious that there was a robbery do not enter. Go to a neighbor's house and call the police.

- If you are at home when a burglar enters, act as if you're sleeping. Unless there is immediate danger, pretending to be asleep can save your life.

- If suddenly you are face to face with the robber, try to stay calm. It is likely that he is as surprised as you are. The police recommend that you tell the thief with great calmness, "Tell me what you want and I will give it to you". Most thieves will simply run. It is far better to lose a watch than risk losing your life. Call the police immediately after the robber leaves. Do not touch anything because it can affect and alter some tests.

- If the intruder attacks, do everything possible to escape.
