    Importance of Physical Activity

    • Gymnastics

Daily physical activity can make a big difference in controlling children's blood sugar levels. Those levels are reduced during physical activity, allowing glucose to move more efficiently from the bloodstream into the muscles. Physical activity also helps maintain a healthy heart and muscles, weight, and blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Before your child implements changes in activity levels, check with your child's physician.

    Walking

    • Walking dogs

If children with type 2 diabetes aren't exercising or physically active, get them moving. Consider the time your child sits watching TV, being on the computer or playing games. Use some of those hours to begin simple physical activities, such as walking. Kids can walk around the mall window shopping with a friend or parent, walk the dog or enjoy a walk around the neighborhood with friends. If it's safe, your child could walk to and from school with friends or family.

    Hiking

    • Hiking

Children who like nature may enjoy hiking. Families can hike together or even join a hiking group to make things more fun and educational. Hiking may not be a daily activity for your children, but it could be a weekend activity for the whole family.

    Interactive Video Games

    • Game room

If your child likes video games, buy an interactive video game. There are plenty of interactive video games that require physical activities, such as jumping, dancing and stretching. But like any physical activity, make certain your child doesn't overexert himself, especially if he's obese or hasn't been physically active at all.

    Martial Arts

    • Martial arts

Most children are fascinated with the martial arts. There are several types to select from, such as Karate, Ju-Jitsu, Tae Kwon Do, Judo and kickboxing. In addition to making your child physically fit, martial arts can give your child focus, an opportunity to meet new friends, and build her self-esteem and confidence.

    Biking

    • Biking

Biking is an activity kids tend to do together. It's great exercise for children who like being outdoors. Depending on where you live, biking in the neighborhood or a park that's bicycle-friendly with paths designated for cyclists can be safe.
