Elders are usually considered as a burden to the society.
People resort to abusing since they are unable to adjust to the needs of elderly people that include personal assistance and medical care.
Seniors can be abused by family members, relatives, staff of a day-care center and even a hired care taker.
Elder abuse practices include physical abuse such as inflicting wounds, psychological abuse through frightening or shouting, financial exploitation, self-neglect, sexual abuse and neglecting essential needs of elders such as food, water, medicines, shelter, clothing, healthcare, comfort and safety.
Denial of civil and constitutional rights of an elderly person also is another form of abuse.
According to available statistical data, around 60 percent of aged women are most vulnerable to get abused.
Even people, who are physically and mentally disabled and need to depend on someone for providing care, are at a higher risk.
Some of the common symptoms that indicate abuse include bruises, cuts, sprains, burns, fractures, bedsores, ragged looks, occurrence of illnesses due to under-utilization of prescribed medicines, dirty clothing and signs of malnutrition.
Psychological disturbances are quite common among persons who have been abused.
Psychological symptoms include anxiety, nervousness, irritable behavior, fear, hesitant talking, feeling of despair, depression, confused, suspicious and avoiding eye contact.
Any person who is being abused can inform the authorities over the telephone by just calling the abuse hotline number.
The call can also be made by any well-wisher on behalf of the victim.
While making the call, one should provide details including name of the victim, address, a brief description about the possible signs that have been noticed and information about the responsible person.
The complaint is duly attended by the Adult Protective Services.
