You plant and grow your own herbs, indoors, near your kitchen or outdoors in your front or back yard because of its usefulness.
Now, you've been successful in your domestic herb or home herb garden, but how about managing it or making use of it? In this aspect, we need to do some 'little work' for us to achieve our objective.
You need to harvest your herbs so that you can use them.
In harvesting your herbs you need to have good timing.
The essential oils that we get from our herb harvest are of great value and should not be affected by the heat of the sun or the wind.
It is best to harvest your herbs during the sunny season on the first part of the day - an arid and quiet morning.
When harvesting, don't remove the plant entirely.
Be sure that before harvesting, the herb plant must be free from insects and that its leaves have no damages.
Enough amount of the herb plant's foliage is needed for the plant to grow again healthily, so, be sure that only one-third of its foliage at one time can be taken.
You don't have to use all the herbs that you have harvested during the day.
Keep the rest of your harvest in the refrigerator to be used the next day or later.
Drying is one of the three typical ways in which you can preserve your herbs for future use.
Usually, in drying herbs, bundle six to twelve stems and near the base of the stems must be free from any foliage.
You need a cool place without sunlight to hang the bundle of herbs.
You can dry the leaves individually by placing them on a rack or screen.
Another typical way of preserving your herbs is by freezing.
The herbs are cut into ΒΌ inch pieces and in a baking sheet lined with wax paper they are placed to be frozen until they are used.
The third way to preserve herbs is by using salt or vinegar.
For example, you can soak basil, tarragon or mint with vinegar and they can last for many months.
By putting salt on fresh herbs and keeping it in a tightly sealed container is likewise a form of preserving.
Many of us still prefer using herbs fresh straight from the garden.
See to it that your herbs are clean before using it fresh in your recipes.
Wash your herbs in a bowl of cool water.
If you have plenty of herbs to wash, use the sink to wash them properly and put two tablespoon of salt to fight away insects without harm for your herb plant.
After removing the herbs from the water, use a salad spinner in drying them.
