How Old Is Your Child?
When you select your learning toy, consider the age of the child. It will be more challenging and easier on the pocket to select a toy that is for a slightly older child than for a step down and therefore younger child. If a toy does not stimulate the child's curiosity, they are likely to lose interest in it fairly rapidly.

What will appeal?
When selecting a learning toy, consider what might appeal to your child. If they like music, you might consider an early musical instrument. Alternatively an early music player such as a child's CD player. An adventurous child might like a toy that allows them to stretch themselves physically such as a skipping rope.

What does it look like?
Bright colours and happy images always work well with younger children. The older child might like something a little more sophisticated looking that will pique their curiosity and challenge their mind more.

How long will it last?
Selecting a toy that will last more than 2 minutes is always a wise move. Children sometimes put their toys through the endurance test. Consider how the toy is powered, will you have to regularly replace batteries? Quality toys might cost a little more, but they will provide a longer lasting educational experience than a cheaper and more flimsy alternative.

Is it Challenging?
Learning toys that challenge the mind provide the most entertainment to children. Select toys that will make the child think and use their brain rather than ones that involve pushing buttons to make a cartoon character jump. Creativity learning toys such as clay or craft kits are something that endure the test of time for children. Children will enjoy the process of making something and then the pride that comes with a completed project.

Is it Safe?
Be careful when you select learning toys that have small or sharp pieces. They may be geared more toward older children or parental guidance should be given. Check labels and packages for any harmful chemicals or materials use and do not introduce any learning toys that will do more harm than good.

With consideration and careful selection, it is possible to select learning toys that will stand the test of time in both durability and engagement. Pick wisely and you won't have any regrets and neither will your child!
