The fascinating history of bass fishing begins in the late 18th century and continues today. It was most likely originally practiced in the Southern United States as a source of food. It has since gained a much wider audience covering all ages and many nations. In addition to the United States bass fishing thrives in Australia, Cuba, South Africa, as well as most of Europe.

Timelines

Onesimus Ustonson created the first geared (multiplying) fishing reel around 1768. This reel eventually evolved into the bait casting style fishing reel.

William Shakespeare Jr. materializes the production of a level wind device and secured its patent on 1897.

The William J. Jamison Company introduced the Shannon Twin Spinner in 1915. Over the years this fishing lure evolved into today's spinner baits.

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) was created when President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Tennessee Valley Authority Act on May 18, 1933. To generate power the TVA built numerous dams. The active integrated management of the Tennessee valley resulted in vastly improving the habitat for wildlife and fish. These dams were later used for culturing different varieties of bass.

Five years later, DuPont Company filed patent for nylon fishing net. This was later developed into nylon monofilament fishing line.

The year 1992 is noteworthy because Larry Nixon earned $1 million as a professional bass fisherman that year.

Bass Fishing Events

Several Species of bass are being caught in the fishing events are the following:

Micropterus salmoides (Lacepede) - Largemouth Bass
Micropterus dolomieui - Smallmouth bass
Micropterus punctatus - Kentucky Bass

Other species of Micropterus are also caught, however, the Largemouth bass remains very popular.

The popularity of bass fishing in the 1950s provided the springboard for the development of modern fishing gear. Fishing gear from bass boats, fishing rods, fishing reels, line, plugs, and assorted tackle have all developed dramatically over the past half century.

Electronic gear has made significant improvement over the past 30 years. Today advanced electronics are routinely deployed to assist the angler. From hand held items to bass boat mounted items, there are a plethora of devices that can be used to enhance one's bass fishing experience.

The bass fishing industry is reported to contribute between $50 to $70 Billion to the US economy.
