Action

• Motilium works by increasing the pressure in the lower part of the esophagus and improves the movement and contractions of the stomach and the bowels, allowing the stomach to empty. It also acts as a blocking agent against the behavioral effects of dopamine (a brain chemical). Motilium is used to treat a number of conditions.
  
  

Nausea and Vomiting

• Motilium works as an anti-emetic. It does this by blocking the action of the chemical messenger in the brain that creates the feeling of nausea and vomiting. This makes it an effective treatment for gastro-intestinal conditions such as the nausea ad vomiting related to the symptoms of medications taken for Parkinson disease or as a result of radiation therapy for treating cancer.
  
  

Gastro-paresis

• Motilium works as a prokinetic (speeds up the emptying of the stomach and the motility of the intestines). This makes it effective in treating gastroparesis, a condition that occurs when the vagus nerve (the nerve that controls the muscles of the larynx, stimulates digestion and regulates the heartbeat) is damaged. This causes delayed emptying of the gastrointestinal tract and the uncomfortable symptoms of fullness and bloating.
  
  

Dosage

• The dosage of Motilium is different for each patient. Your health care provider will prescribe the appropriate dosage, number of doses to be taken daily and the length of time to take this medication based on the medical condition that's being treated.
  
  

Side Effects

• Motilium, like all medications, has its benefits and its side effects. Side effects may include an allergic reaction which is a serious medical emergency. Symptoms may include a rash or hives with itching along with swelling of the face, tongue or throat as well as difficulty breathing. Seek immediate emergency medical care and attention if you experience any of these symptoms.
  
  Other side effects may include headache, dry mouth and menstrual irregularities along with loss of balance, loss of muscle control and swelling of the face, hands and lower legs or feet.
  
  

Warning

• Motilium should not be taken if you have had an allergic reaction to it. It is dangerous to use Motilium with conditions such as a gastrointestinal hemorrhage, gastrointestinal obstruction or gastrointestinal perforation. Motilium should not be used in individuals with a prolactin (a hormone secreted by the pituitary gland) releasing pituitary tumor.
