I am currently consulting with a large multi-national organization to help deployment of a centralized system to house all the information for their product or MRO maintenance repair and operations.
Which, in practical terms, this means that they are centralizing their databases of information needed to control, manage and use any item that can potentially be purchased, but does not go into their final product.
No small task for a measuring stick. Master Data Management, data cleansing, data standardization, intra-organization of reduplication are on the radar of most if not all large companies.
The most important part of the process is to select the application (s) that are best for your organization, not one made or owned by the largest company, and not one that the marketing smarter, not appearing in the latest report from research firm best on the market (think of the rating agencies who rated toxic mortgage-backed securities subprime d or d)
The software was chosen (contractual obligation not to say the name) has a main screen to enter most data on a given issue, this screen contains not less than 50 possible fields in a table. There are also 3 additional screens each with less than 50 fields of data entry, the following screens are used to associate information such as images ancillary to an item.
