Kids and Owning a Pygmy Hedgehog

Owning pets is one of the best ways to teach our kids responsibility. Do you feel that your child is ready for one? Our advice is to get him or her a pet that isn't too tough to handle: a pygmy hedgehog!

You're wondering why choose a pygmy hedgehog? They're exotic, and the quills are intimidating! But let's get ahold of the bigger picture. A lot of states and territories allow pet hedgehogs at home (some states in the US need special permit). This tells us that the pygmy hedgehog is a domesticated creature, and is safe to own. Take note, however, that this only applies to the African Pygmy Hedgehog and other domesticated pygmy hedgehog – remember that it is illegal to own endangered species, so make sure that you're purchasing the domesticated kind.

A pygmy hedgehog pet requires a delicacy and supervision that is more challenging than the more common dog or cat breeds. But a winning perk of owning a pygmy hedgehog includes having a serene home free of the usual ruckus of bigger pets. Think of owning a pygmy hedgehog as having a small, quiet rare dog or cat breed, except the kids would certainly agree that a pet hedgehog is way cooler!

Pet owners are attracted to pygmy hedgehogs because of their size, temperament and look. It is difficult to resist the creature's cuteness: furry face, round black eyes and long button nose. Owners are also attracted to the pygmy hedgehog's marvelous quill, which are smooth to the touch.

Here are some general information about pygmy hedgehog care:
  • Give your pet a generous enclosure with an exercise wheel and ample ventilation. A pygmy hedgehog is a solitary creature; do not house other pets in their cage!
  • Pygmy hedgehogs are omnivores. Feed them fruits, vegetables, and meats like chicken and turkey. They can also be fed cat food.
  • A pygmy hedgehog does not need to be bathed constantly. When bathing them, use warm water and a toothbrush for the quills. Be gentle and pat them dry afterwards.

A pygmy hedgehog makes an ideal pet because they are generally timid. With this in mind, kids should not be demanding of a pet hedgehog and must complement its attitude. Hedgehogs also like to explore, though they are not keen to socializing with other animals. A home should be free of pets, especially those that are too aggressive and threatening for a hedgehog.
