How to Compare Ebooks

    File Format

    • E-books come in a variety of file formats, including PDF, PDB, AZW and LIT. File format is important because it must be compatible with the device you want to use. PDF files can be opened on most home computers and some handheld devices, but AZW files are specific to the Amazon Kindle, and conversion software is required to open e-books in other formats. LIT files can only be opened by downloading software to devices with Microsoft operating systems, so make sure your device supports the file format before downloading an e-book.

    E-readers

    • Many companies sell e-readers or devices specifically used for downloading, storing and reading e-books. Amazon, Sony and Barnes & Noble are just a few of the companies with e-readers on the market. They come in various sizes with a variety of features, and range in price from $54.99 to $499. Some use e-ink designed to lessen eye strain and some come with wireless internet capabilities. Research each device and its features to see which one will best fit your needs.

    Benefits

    • Two benefits of e-books are cost and space. Hardback new releases range from $25 to $35, but in e-book format they range from $9.99 to $13.99. Many titles are free to download and paperbacks cost a fraction of their cover price. You can also store hundreds of e-books on your computer or e-reader with relatively little memory, which will save space in your home or office.
