The Lakers and Mike Brown: Will It Work?
Firstly Mike Brown is a great hire.
Who else out there has handled a great talent, took a losing franchise one year to one of the best the next, has had mentors such as Gregg Popovich (from the San Antonio Spurs), and has the acceptance of Kobe Bryant and Derek Fisher? When you realize the other options that were available to the Lakers this is like finding a diamond in the rough.
There is no question the Lakers have it on the offensive end of the floor, it has been the defensive side of the floor that comes and goes.
Brown focuses on defense.
Defense wins championships hands down.
It was the unrelenting three point demonstrations from Dallas and Oklahoma.
The steady dose of pick-and-roll that the Lakers could never defend correctly.
It was also the driving frustration for Andrew Bynum who constantly complained about the defense and who was usually out on an island at the three-point arc guarding a smaller faster player and getting beat constantly.
Brown can bring a new perspective.
Phil Jackson is a great coach, but too much of a great thing can be bad.
The Lakers seemed very complacent and un-energized for reasons that are still being figured out.
Was it age? Was it overconfidence? Was it boredom? The Lakers are aging, but the current group has a solid 5 years left with a few tweaks here and there.
Brown and Bynum are close to taking the reigns.
Dwight Howard has one year left on his contract in Orlando but if Orlando hasn't done anything this far (with Shaq and Howard) what could they possibly do in one year to make him stay? Brian Shaw would have been a great fan favorite but be honest, do the Lakers need a first year head coach? Letting Bryan Shaw expand his horizons by coaching another team and honing his coaching style elsewhere is a great opportunity for him.
Plus, once a Laker always a Laker! I would not be surprised to see Shaw back with the Lakers after Browns run! The Lakers are in a great position and I am positive the Laker fans will be greatly surprised from the accomplishments Brown will achieve with this great team! Laker fans are all too aware that there must be3 a new infusion of energy, a new set of ideas, and a renewed focus.
Hiring Brown will be one of those great hires that will keep the Lakers franchise as the best franchise in the NBA.
